I was a little too good today. This morning I had a shake with spinach, frozen mixed berries, a scoop of protein powder, a cup of almond milk and my Inositol supplement.

The gym was hard. I’m still sore from the week’s gym visits but made myself go today. I focused on biceps and core to give the rest a break.

Again I went off to other activities immediately after the gym (d’oh) — which today meant getting groceries. I went way over budget, mainly because we are hosting a lot of people tomorrow for the kids’ birthday party. For lunch I whipped up a salad of mixed greens, slivered almonds, cranberries and blue cheese. I felt so naughty eating that cheese on my salad.

By dinner time I was definitely in need of more fuel. Peanut wanted to help with dinner so I obliged. Instead of the shrimp boil (which TBH only I enjoy) I altered it to a shrimp and sausage skillet with some rice. She started freaking out when I poured beer into the skillet, but I was craving umami so badly.

Beer-braised Shrimp and Sausage

Dinner turned out quite delicious. It isn’t 100% following the gameplan, but I’m still pleased with myself. After veggie-heavy meals it felt good to get a good belly of meat. I may use this recipe again but add celery and maybe a bay leaf.

Beer Shrimp & Sausage

  • Natural andouille sausages
  • Half pound of small shrimp
  • Small white onion
  • 2 bottles beer
  • Old Bay
  • Rice, prepared as directed

Cut up sausage and onion into large chunks. Cook with butter in heavy skillet until starts to brown. Splash a little beer in the bottom and scrape. Once it starts to boil pull out the sausage and onion. Toss in the shrimp and add the rest of the beer. Sprinkle with Old Bay to taste. Cook shrimp through then toss the sausage and onion back into skillet. Serve over rice.
