Gyms are closed. I don’t know when they’ll reopen. I do know that the burn from weight training is something I crave. Hubs used to do a lot of weight lifting (like, met his lifelong goal of bench pressing 315 pounds kind of weight lifting). He has a handful of weights in the garage, so I went on a mission to find them today.

The first thing I found was my old 5-pound hand weights. Those might come in handy… But the thing I was really excited to find was a 20-pound kettlebell. I did a quick circuit of “teapot tips” for the sides of my core, then some squats for the drumsticks. Feeling the burn already. Sweet.

Day 4 and Counting

It may seem counterintuitive to start all that stuff from my last post during PMS, but I did and I’m glad I did. First, removing all those inflammatory foods has done wonders for the general achiness I’ve felt. My neck isn’t as stiff and the premenstrual migraine was more of an annoying zing in the temple rather than a debilitating throb.

I also got my period a day earlier and it is much heavier than I expected. This is a big deal because I take birth control pills to keep my hormones in check, so I can usually estimate the arrival of Aunt Flow down to the hour. I’m not sure if it is related to making different food choices, but it almost seems like my body is trying to reboot. 

Quarantine Brain

I put my toe back in the water of working from home this week. I had a few odd jobs that took a few minutes of my time each day or so, but this week was my first client call about a new full project. I lost my train of thought mid-sentence a few times on the call, then afterward I was really struggling to come up with the creative deliverables the client needed to get the project started. I was really upset with myself. Being forced to take that time off and focus solely on being a homebound mother of 2 had essentially caused the masters-degree-educated side of my brain to atrophy.

I decided to give myself a break and get outside to clear my head. I took Bubs to a local lake with his fishing rod to practice casting. He doesn’t actually like to fish, just throw the bobber in the water, so it was a good outing for us both with no animals harmed. It helped tremendously. I woke up really early this morning, made myself a cup of coffee with ovaltine powder and heavy cream — three things I cut out last week — and got to work. Everything worked out well. I got the deliverable delivered and now I can spend my day doing things like planning meals and listening to Bubs talk about 1990s wrestling figures who just wear underwear.

All in all I’m in a much better headspace than I was a week ago.
